Summary
The Bible contains a number of recurring figures, such as the “vineyard” and “kingdom,” which help readers grasp and connect ideas across the Word. This conference explores the significance of an overlooked but vital image: God’s holy mountain. Rev. Spotts will be our guide across a range of biblical summits and related alpine motifs, offering fresh vantage upon the unified story of Scripture and its central question for every person, “Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD?” Who may stand in his holy place?” (Psa 24:3)
Topic Outline
Season 1 (Friday, 6 PM):
“Made for the Mountain”
Session 1 introduces the overall topic and objectives. We will learn how to orient the Bible by means of its “theological topography.”
Season 2 (Saturday, 2:30 PM):
“Asking for an Avalanche”
Session 2 surveys paths by which mankind, after the fall into sin, attempts to re-ascend to God’s presence, or at least lay hold of heavenly blessings. We will see how certain episodes serve as timeless warnings about the peril of approaching upon the holy summit.
Season 3 (Saturday, 5 PM) :
“Spying the Route Up”
Session 3 traces the unfolding hope, present throughout the Old Testament, that God would open a pass into his presence and graciously re-establish his people upon the heights.
AM Sermon:
“A Guided Ascent” (Jn 4:20-21)
John relates a story of a Samaritan woman asking Jesus which mountain to worship upon. His answer provides essential guidance for how sinners can ascend to God’s holy presence with full assurance of being accepted.
PM Sermon:
“Pressing Upward” (Phil 3:14)
Many come to Christ expecting a lasting mountain-top experience. Others experience their spiritual life as a plateau. The apostle, however, presents our path as a lifelong pressing up toward the “heavenly prize.” This sermon addresses challenges and motivations involved in reaching that goal.
