Can Voting Secure Godly Government?

Over in the Reformed Steakhouse, conservative pundit John Loftus wrote (in gratuitous capitals, no less),

WE WILL NEVER GET GODLY GOVERNMENT BY VOTING FOR MEN WHO HAVE NO BIBLICAL VIEW OF CIVIL GOVERNMENT….

I responded that we will never get godly government by voting, either. Voting—even for the most ideal candidate—can never insure elected officials will honor their duty to walk according to the moral law, regardless of platforms and promises. We can vote in David and watch him become Saul over night.

Rest assured, we will get godly civil government the moment God chooses to give it to us. That moment just happens to come, I believe, no sooner than Christ’s return. Until then, governments will fall terribly short of the standards expected of the church. We therefore await the time when they shall be made a footstool unto the Lord Jesus, praying God inclines them to rule wisely for the benefit of the Church. Kings’ hearts are in the hand of the Lord. If we spend more time arguing about politics than praying God’s “will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” we have ourselves to blame.

Fear leads masses to do fearful things, even to become the monster they feared. It is better to overcome fear by courage than to surrender freedom in the name of security.
It is a fact of almost universal nature that where there is much money there will also be much laundering.

The corrupting influence of money makes its way to all positions of power. Do not forget behind the semblance of upstanding authority stands the potential for unjust abuses. Systems of accountability for governments must be maintained vigilantly lest the interests of the public are undermined by those with their hands on the inside.

Fear may lead the mind to exquisite self-deception in order to maintain a sense of security in the face of grave reality. There are always those who, rather than face their fears, instantly dismiss grim facts as “ravings of imbeciles.” But to discount reasonable warnings, however ominous, is itself irrational, and there is no simple cure for such madness.

Senate Votes To Let Military Detain Americans Indefinitely

While we ran holiday errands last week the Senate approved a bill to indefinitely hold without trial Americans suspected of terrorist plotting. You may not be aware how broad the definition of what constitutes evidence for such “plotting” is. I’ll say it plainly: this is the sort of legislation engineered to control large scale dissent, a la Russia’s gulags, and spells a definite attack on our right to fair trials by juries of peers. Apparently the best way to stop terrorists from ending our freedom is to kill it ourselves.

Never forget the rights your now enjoy were not given to you by government, but were wrested from them by force and preserved by a balance of power. Rights of citizens continue only because the most ambitious are held in check from usurping control. The weaker We the People become, the more our rights and property will be shuttled away by those who esteem their own interests higher.

BREAKING NEWS: “A group of almost 5000 radicals, described mostly as poor, uneducated, and jobless, have entered and occupied the most prominent square of the Capitol. The movement, believed to be lead by a core of a dozen men, were warned repeatedly not to gather on private property to spread their propaganda. For days they have ignored this instruction and several were forcibly arrested and beaten. At this moment, a man identified as Stephen, one of their ringleaders, has begun an illegal speech. We go live to the site…
